DENVER — Coloradans love to embrace the outdoor lifestyle — camping, hiking, skiing, biking and much more. But these can sometimes be expensive hobbies, which is where the Denver-based company Active Junky comes in.
Active Junky, which operates solely as a website at ActiveJunky.com, is on a mission to outfit you properly and save you money.
“The No. 1 reaction when I tell somebody about this business is, especially here in Denver, 'How did I not know about this?'” said Active Junky founder Kevin McInerney.
McInerney is a University of Denver graduate with a passion for the outdoors. He started Active Junky in 2010.
“We’re in business to educate consumers on how to get the best deal possible," he said.
The website now partners with dozens of manufacturers and retailers for extra savings on otherwise expensive gear and clothing.
“It is expensive, and this is a great way to save, no matter what time of year,” said McInerney. “You know, at a lot of our retail partners, you can get 10-, 15-, 20-percent cash back on all products they carry.”
And through the Active Junky website, you can couple that with sale prices the vendors are already offering.
“If you're really trying to find a discount, shop with our merchants that have last year's models, where they're 50 percent plus off," said McInerney.
Available brands include Patagonia, Arcteryx and The North Face. And, you can find discounts on items like jackets, boots, skis, and stuff for the kids.
But, where you can really make hay is on the more expensive items.
“If you're a mountain biker, you understand a really good bike could be $5,000,” said McInerney. “And, to be able to save 10 to 12 percent on that large of a purchase — we're talking about significant savings.”
Here is how it works: You sign up through ActiveJunky.com, create a profile, and then navigate to other shopping sites through the Active Junky website to receive the added cash back.
The rebates come once a quarter in the form of a check or Paypal credit.
“The program is free to join, and it's very easy to use,” said McInerney. “You just have to remember to use it.”
McInerney adds that Active Junky also recently partnered with major retailers like Target and Walmart, and travel sites like Expedia and Hotwire, to save you money on travel and other miscellaneous items.
