EVERGREEN, Colo. — The ice skating rink on Evergreen Lake could open as soon as Friday, according to the Evergreen Park & Recreation District (EPRD).

Employees are flooding the rink with water to increase the thickness of the ice to be around 12 inches. EPRD said it can’t use machinery, like the Zamboni, until the ice is 16 inches thick.

The rink is 8.5 acres with more than 10 hockey rinks and a public rink. It sits among pine-covered mountains about 30 minutes from Denver. In between skating, guests are welcome to go inside a concession area for hot chocolate and snacks.

To check on the status of the ice, call the skating hotline at 720-880-1391.

Houses and days are subject to change due to the weather and conditions, but the rink is typically open from 3:30-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 3:30-8 p.m. on Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m.-7 p.m. on Sunday. Hours may change on holidays.

Evergreen Lake has several events coming up this winter:

  • Skate the Lake, starting at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Enjoy music, food trucks and fireworks at 8 p.m. Skating ends at 10 p.m. Free shuttles are available.
  • Evergreen Lake Plunge, morning of Jan. 1. The Active4All Evergreen Foundation hosts this polar plunge to raise funds for EPRD's INSPIRE program, which offers scholarships for those needing financial assistance and other EPRD-related needs
  • Evergreen Pond Hockey Championship, on Jan. 5 and 6. EPRD is hosting the ninth annual event, which attracts teams from across the country who want to win a cash prize

The Evergreen Lake House is located at 29612 Upper Bear Creek Road, Evergreen.
