THORNTON, Colo. — On Cyber Monday, Denver7 got a look inside Amazon’s Fulfillment Center in Thornton as workers prepared for a busy packing and shipping day.
Cyber Monday 2018 was the single biggest shopping day in the company’s history with toys and fashion items among the top selling products, according to Amazon.
The Thornton Fulfillment Center opened in June 2018. About 1,500 full-time associates work alongside a system of hundreds of Amazon robotics. The robots, which look sort of like red Roomba vacuum cleaners with tall yellow shelves on top, move items around the 855,000-square-foot facility.
The orders are then packed into boxes and prepared for shipment.
Amazon said during the holidays, the operation is working nearly 24 hours a day.
The Thornton fulfillment center focuses on smaller items like books, small electronics and household items. Another fulfillment center in Aurora focuses on large items like bicycles and TVs.
Amazon is promising Cyber Monday discounts of 30 to 50 percent off multiple categories of products. The company has also pledged faster delivery — some items can be delivered within two hours to prime members.
The facility offers tours to anybody interested. While tours are full for December, January dates will be announced soon on Amazon's website here.
