COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Despite the government shutdown, more than 1,500 volunteers from the military, their families and community members are on hand taking calls from children of all ages around the world at the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) on Monday.

NORAD is in its 63rd year of tracking Santa Claus on Christmas Eve at Peterson Air Force Base.

This beloved Santa tracker would not exist if not for a mistake years ago. In 1955, an advertisement was published in the newspaper inviting children to call a hotline to talk to Santa. But the ad published the wrong number, and routed calls to a red phone inside NORAD. One of the men in charge and the Air Force ran with the idea and NORAD was born.
