GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- A man charged in the death of his ex-girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter has been sentenced to 32 years in prison.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports Isaac Ortiz was sentenced Monday for the July 2015 death of Lyla Blackwood. He also was ordered to pay restitution and for counseling for the girl's parents.

Ortiz lived in the home with Blackwood and her mother.

Investigators say Ortiz told them he hit Lyla on the head with his knuckles after getting angry, that he didn't think he hit the girl very hard and he never meant to hurt her.

Ortiz called authorities and said the girl was not breathing.

The cause of death was found to be blunt force injuries to her head and neck, officials said.
