TELLER COUNTY, Colo. —A smiling mugshot marks the end of a six-month manhunt for man authorities have called a “high-risk” sex offender.

Dakota Stewart, 26, was arrested Tuesday morning near the town of Florissant in western Teller County.

He was wanted by Texas authorities since August of last year for failing to register as a sex offender

Acting on a lead about Stewart’s possible location, US Marshals moved in on a Florissant Heights subdivision and found the suspect living off the grid at a campsite.

Stewart was listed as one of Texas’ 10 most wanted sex offender fugitives and was classified as armed and dangerous.

In 2009, Stewart was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child by exposure after incidents in Texas involving two young girls.

The suspect is facing charges of attempting to influence a public servant, criminal impersonation, and failure to register as a sex offender in Colorado. He is being held at the Teller County Jail without bond.
