FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Fort Collins Police Chief Jeff Swoboda is asking people to register their home or business cameras to create a network and help build a safer community.
"I think people want to help us. In fact, people are routinely contacting us after an incident letting us know they have video. So, all we’re really doing now is getting that information beforehand," said Chief Swoboda.
Swoboda says their database would map who has a camera, but they would not have access to the video without permission.
"The amount of things it could be used for are endless," he said.
Fort Collins Police say having a database of who has a security camera wouldn't only help solve crimes faster but it would also help corroborate a person's story.
Chief Swoboda says cameras in a neighborhood or a business could be used to track a person and in the end, help solve their investigation faster by determining their innocence or guilt.
Deborah Tucker recently installed security cameras in her home. She and several others we spoke with say they would be in favor of registering their cameras.
"I think it’s a good thing," Tucker said. "We just want to make sure that our neighborhood and our house is safe. If it helps the police department with keeping us secure, I’m fine with that."
