Former Ellicott school board member sentenced in student sex case

Stefanie Dickinson apologizes during sentencing

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A former school board member in the rural El Paso County town of Ellicott could spend the rest of her life on probation after admitting to sexual encounters with a 17-year-old student.

Stefanie Dickinson, 38, who was the Ellicott school board treasurer, was arrested in 2011 on suspicion of seducing her children’s babysitter.

As part of a plea deal to avoid prison, Dickinson admitted Friday that she and the 17-year-old had sex in her children's backyard playhouse while he was babysitting her three children.

Dickinson apologized in court during her sentencing on Wednesday.

Prosecutors agreed to drop charges related to sexually graphic text messages she was accused of sending to a 14-year-old boy in exchange for Dickinson’s guilty plea to sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.

The judge presiding over the case told Dickinson, "The question you have to live with for a very long time is how you would feel if someone had done that with one of your children?"

Dickinson was given a 90-day suspended jail sentence, to be served only if she violates terms of her probation.  She is barred from being in contact with anyone under 18, except for her children.  She must also undergo a mental health evaluation within 60 days.

Dickinson, who has been living in Texas, intends to have her probation transferred to that state, her attorney said in court.
