ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. — A former drama teacher at Arapahoe High School was sentenced Friday for sexually assaulting one of his students.

Ian Ahern was sentenced to five years in prison for the sex assault on a 17-year-old student that took place in 2014 but was not reported until 2019.

Ahern Ahern pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation of a child. Other charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.

Ahern was convicted of repeatedly sexually assaulting a female student in 2014 after the victim told authorities she sought support from Ahern following the murder of student Claire Davis.

He, in turn, touched her inappropriately and tried to have a romantic relationship with the vulnerable student, prosecutors say. The repeated sex assaults left the victim devastated.

Littleton Public Schools had employed Ahern since 2010. The district severed ties with the drama teacher after his arrest.

His prison sentence will be followed by five years of parole. Ahern must also register as a sex offender.
