WELD COUNTY, Colo. — Five schools in the Greeley-Evans School District 6 are closed Friday due to the norovirus outbreak.
The district announced Thursday evening that the following schools are closed Friday: Madison Elementary School, Scott Elementary School, Franklin Middle School, Jefferson Junior High School and the Transitions Program housed at the former Cameron Elementary School. All other schools are in session.
The school district said it is in contact with the Weld County Health Department and is following cleaning protocols and health precautions.
The norovirus is a highly contagious gastrointestinal virus that causes vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and occasionally fever. While hard to kill, symptoms typically go away within 72 hours.
The school district asked for parents to help stop the outbreak by:
· Keeping their children at home if they are sick or have a stomach ache
· Keep their children who do have the virus out of school until 48 hours after the symptoms have passed
· Clean your home to get rid of the virus and stop it from spreading to other family members
