Faulty shell explodes, sinks barge, cuts short Grand Lake fireworks

GRAND LAKE, Colo. - The Grand Lake fireworks was cut short Friday night when there was an explosion and one of three fireworks barges sank, according to the Ski-Hi Daily News.

The newspaper said the 20-minute show was cut to 12 minutes.

A faulty shell toppled over and set off the finale before the end of the show, according to show facilitator Chuck Barry.

Officials with the Grand Lake Chamber of Commerce wrote on Facebook that, "one of the barges was damaged resulting in a shortened show."

The Chamber also said the fireworks will be back on September 20.

Last year's Grand Lake fireworks show was marred in tragedy when a family leaving the show was hit by another vehicle. Greg Westley, 50, of Estes Park, was killed. His wife, Debbie Westley, 49, was flown by helicopter to Denver Health Medical Center with serious injuries. Three children were also flown to Denver hospitals.
