DENVER — The Dumb Friends League has slashed the adoption fees for its dogs, while reminding possible adopters about the responsibility of taking care of a new pet.

Starting today through Friday, the Dumb Friends League is offering a 50% discount on fees for all dogs 1 year old and up at the Leslie A. Malone Center in Denver and the Buddy Center in Castle Rock.

Maia Brusseau, public relations manager at the Dumb Friends League, said that while they hope people take advantage of this special, they want to remind those who are interested that adopting a pet is a life-long commitment. They should ensure that they can care for an animal before adopting, she said.

“If you have extra time off from school or work and not a lot of activity in your home over the holidays, it could be a great time,” she said. “However, if you are busy and planning to have company, parties or to travel, you may want to wait until your home is a little less hectic before adopting a pet.”

Brusseau also stressed that while it may be exciting to adopt a pet for the holidays, it’s never a good idea to give one as a gift.

“Picking a pet is a personal choice and we encourage people to instead put together a gift basket with toys, treats and gift card from our shelter if they really want to give the gift of a pet,” she said.

All adoptions include a spaying or neutering surgery, vaccinations, a microchip ID, a free visit to a veterinarian and 30 days of free pet insurance.

The standard adoption screening process still applies.
