A Denver Sheriff Department deputy faces assault and battery charges for allegedly punching his pregnant wife in the face after she locked him out of the house.
Deputy Martin Varela, 26, remains working at the department while his case moves through Aurora Municipal Court.
“We are waiting for the result of the criminal case before taking any administrative action,” sheriff’s department spokeswoman Daria Serna said.
Aurora police arrested Varela on Aug. 1 in connection to the alleged assault in early December, police records obtained by The Denver Post show.
Varela’s wife, who is a Denver police officer, had texted a friend about an incident after she had locked Varela out of their Aurora home one night. Varela climbed through the living room window before finding her upstairs. He then grabbed his pregnant wife by the hair, dragged her out of bed, choked her and punched her in the head, according to her texts, which are included in the police report.
