DENVER -- Denver Public Schools is getting rid of suspensions and expulsions for its youngest students.

Denver Board of Education members unanimously approved a resolution Monday evening that will change the way pre-school to 3rd-grade students are disciplined.

Under the new DPS policy, suspensions and expulsions in early childhood education will only happen in the most extreme cases.

Before Monday’s vote, the board received feedback from educators and community members about ending suspensions. Some teachers expressed concerns that the new policy will keep dangerous students in the classroom.

During the 2015-2016 school year, bout 500 young students were suspended.
