DENVER — A man died Tuesday morning after being shot by Denver police officers in an apartment building near downtown Denver the night before.
David Litton, 40, died at the hospital of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.
Police were called to the building at W. 12th Avenue and Galapago Street around 10 p.m. Monday when a neighbor heard yelling from inside an apartment on the fourth floor, according to Division Chief Ron Saunier with the Denver Police Department.
"Officers were informed that a party was threatening to shoot an individual in there," he said. "You could hear an individual that was also in the house, that was reported as crying."
Several apartments in the building were evacuated while officers talked with the man inside the apartment.
"Eventually, the party comes out of the house armed with a what appears to be a black handgun," Saunier said. "(The person) approaches officers, multiple officers wind up perceiving a threat, firing their weapons."
Litton was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead Tuesday morning.
No officers were injured in the shooting and police have not heard of any additional injuries from anyone inside the apartment.

This marks the 16th officer-involved shooting in Colorado in 2019. That is two more than this time last year.
Nearly half of them have been deadly, with seven people killed by officers.
The Aurora Police Department, Denver's District Attorney and the Office of the Independent Monitor were investigating this shooting.
