If you own an avalanche beacon, you probably want to dig it out of storage and ensure it hasn't been recalled.
About 20,000 Ortovox avalanche transceivers, which are imported out of Longmont, have been recalled.
The transceiver is used as a beacon to locate a person in the event that they’re buried by an avalanche. The devices are sold at outdoor specialty stories, ski shops and directly to avalanche professionals, search and rescue personnel and mountain guides. It was on the shelves from July 2010 to April 2018 for about $350.
The devices are distributed out of Germany.
Feedback from Ortovox’s safety academy partners revealed that in some rare situations, there was a temporary disruption of the transmission function, the company said. The software error may occur on the Ortovox 3+ avalanche transceivers that run on software version 2.1.
The company reported no known accidents that were caused due to the error, but as a precautionary measure, decided to recall all of the Ortovox 3+ avalanche transceivers that are running software version 2.1.
The devices that are affected by this recall cannot be used without the required software update to versions 2.2, which rectifies the error, the company said.
How do you check what version you have? Push the search/send switch into the send position and ensure the switch is pushed in. Switch the device on and the information will display on the screen, the company said.
