ROGGEN, Colo. – A Colorado State Patrol trooper was killed in a crash on westbound Interstate 76 near Roggen Wednesday morning.

Corporal Daniel Groves, 52, was on scene of a vehicle that slid off the roadway when the driver of 2001 Volvo lost control and struck Groves outside his patrol vehicle, according to a release from the Colorado State Patrol.

Groves was transported to Platte Valley Medical Center where he was later declared deceased.

The driver of the Volvo, 58-year-old John Carpenter, of Centennial, may face charges related to driving too fast for conditions, CSP said. He was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries.

Groves began his career with the CSP in 2007. He is survived by his partner of two years.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis called Groves a hero.

"He was, and always will be remembered as, a hero— Our hearts are with Dan Grove’s partner and family," Polis tweeted.

Polis ordered all flags to be lowered to half-staff statewide on all public buildings following Groves' passing, to honor the Colorado State Patrol Corporal.
