EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. -- A state representative from El Paso County has written a letter to President Trump asking for additional resources to combat illegal immigration and to investigate government officials in "sanctuary" cities.
The letter comes as the Denver city council prepares to vote Monday night on an ordinance that would provide some protections for immigrants regardless of their legal status.
The Public Safety Enforcement Priorities Act would protect victims and witnesses to crimes whether they are in the U.S. legally or not.
It would also set in city ordinance language prohibiting city employees from collecting information on people’s immigration status.
In a letter to Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, Rep. Dave Williams says, "your support for this so called public safety ordinance is troubling to say the least."
In a separate letter to President Donald Trump, Williams writes, "I ask that you increase ICE raids and enforcements, lock federal funds to Denver, and that the Department of Justice investigate Denver officials for any violation of any applicable immigration, anti smuggling, or obstruction of justice laws."
Mayor Hancock's office responded by saying, "We are not going to engage in an obvious effort by Mr. Williams to create some headlines for himself."
In his letter to the President, Williams identifies himself as Latino lawmaker and a concerned citizen. He says policies like Denver's will attract more criminals to Colorado.
