DENVER — Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser on Wednesday led a coalition of dozens of other attorneys general in condemning last week's riots at the U.S. Capitol, and Weiser also called for President Trump to be impeached.
“Last week’s attack on the Congress and the U.S. Capitol was aimed at the foundation of our democratic republic itself and the very concept of the peaceful transition of power," Weiser said. "To those who break the law or seek to undermine the very foundations of our nation, we must make clear that there are boundaries one cannot cross and that lawbreakers will be held accountable."
Attorneys general from all states except Texas, Indiana, Louisiana and Montana signed the letter. Leaders from the District of Columbia, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and Virgin Islands also signed the letter, which was sent to Acting U.S. Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen.
"We all just witnessed a very dark day in America," the letter read. "The events of January 6 represent a direct, physical challenge to the rule of law and our democratic republic itself. Together, we will continue to do our part to repair the damage done to institutions and build a more perfect union. As Americans, and those charged with enforcing the law, we must come together to condemn lawless violence, making clear that such actions will not be allowed to go unchecked."
