BROOMFIELD, Colo. — A woman and man were taken into custody after a shooting at the Walmart near the intersection of Sheridan Boulevard and W. 120th Avenue Tuesday afternoon. Police said they did not believe anyone was injured in the shooting.

Broomfield police officers and officers from the Westminster Police Department responded to the Walmart just before 2 p.m. Tuesday on a report of shots fired, Broomfield Police spokesperson Sgt. Steve Griebel said Tuesday afternoon.

Officers secured the scene and searched for victims and suspects, and took a woman into custody, Griebel said. He said her age and race was unknown as of 3 p.m. The shooting happened near the southwest corner of the store, near the Subway, Griebel said.

Nobody was found with injuries inside or outside the store. Griebel said the initial investigation by officers shows that the woman and a man exchanged gunfire inside the store.

Officers believe the two have some sort of relationship but said they were unsure exactly how they knew one another. Griebel said officers were not sure who the man involved in the shooting was, but that he had fled the scene.

Since the two shot at one another, Griebel said officers did not believe there was a danger to the public.

Griebel said that the woman was taken into custody “very quickly” and that they learned about the second possible suspect through interviews with witnesses.

The second suspect, a man, was taken into custody later that day, Broomfield police announced at 6:15 p.m.

Broomfield police initially called the scene an “active shooter situation” as more than 10 police cars, several fire trucks and ambulances responded to the scene. By 2:30 p.m., police said they had the scene “under control” but asked people to avoid the area.

Employees and shoppers at the store were being given blankets to stay warm and buses were being brought in for warmth and to transport witnesses for interviews.

“Just when is this going to end? When does it stop? When are we safe to go shopping or you know go to school or the movies? When does it stop?” said Shawn Padilla, who was arriving to the Walmart when police got to the scene. “Hopefully everyone that was in there working and shopping is safe and OK.”

The Walmart remained closed Tuesday, police said. It will reopen Wednesday at 6 a.m.
