BROOMFIELD, Colo. – A Broomfield Police Department officer is going above and beyond the call for service after donating part of her liver to a complete stranger last year.
Carolyn Becker, a six-year veteran with the Broomfield Police Department, signed up to donate a life-saving organ to a stranger through UCHealth Colorado back in August of 2018.
Hospital staff found she was the perfect match for an 11-year-old boy whose liver was failing, and thanks to her generosity, the boy was able to get a second chance at life.
About five months ago, however, Becker received a thank you letter from the recipient in which he tells her he can now excel in school and that he would like to meet some day in person.
She later learned that the out-of-pocket costs for that surgery ended up costing nearly $20,000. Becker set up a GoFundMe account, but she says it hasn’t been raising as much as she had hoped.
Because the money raised hasn’t been much, the officer said she’s also had to basically panhandle at a street corner in order to help the boy and his family.
“There’s one burden relieved, but the burden of financial expense is scary too,” reads Becker’s GoFundMe page. “No parents should have to watch their child’s organs fail. No parents should be financially strained because they made the right choice for their child.”
