JOHNSTOWN, Colo. — A Boulder County woman who evacuated her chicken farm due to wildfires came home to empty nests after several of her chickens went missing.
Sara Mayer is clearly fond of her chickens.
“I love chickens. Giraffes are my favorite but chickens are a close second,” she said.
She owns Sara’s Pick of the Coop, and the pasture poultry farmer has thousands of birds. But when the Cameron Peak and Calwood fires were getting close to her other farm, they had to fly the coop.
She received a lot of help from people on social media to get her birds to this new spot.
“I probably had about 10 or 12 pickup trucks show up and loaded chickens in crates, and people brought them down and did loads to get all the chickens evacuated,” she said.
When things settled a couple weeks later, she realized some of her favorite chickens weren't there. She believes two to four crates of chickens didn't make it.
“There’s at least 20 (chickens) in a crate,” Mayer said. “I’m hoping it’s a mistake, and if they could bring them back that would be great. I won’t be mad. My chickens are my livelihood,” she said.
She's hopeful her feathered friends will be back laying eggs in their nests soon.
“I want to know what happened? Where did they go?” she said.
