Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan has cancer, won't seek re-election

AURORA, Colo. — The mayor of Aurora says he won't be seeking re-election after being diagnosed with cancer.

In a Facebook post Monday, Mayor Steve Hogan that he learned he had cancer after coming down with an illness that had initially seemed like the flu. He didn't say what type of cancer he was diagnosed with.

Hogan said he will continue to serve as mayor while he undergoes treatment but he won't seek re-election in 2019, saying, "It is time for new leadership."

"I would like to thank everyone for their unwavering support and friendship in this difficult time," Hogan said. "I must admit, I have taken the liberty of drawing on the collective strength of my family, friends and our great city and am ready to begin my journey to recovery. I humbly accept your prayers and certainly appreciate your well wishes. But I would ask that you take any concern or any angst and turn it to service-go do something great for Aurora!"

Hogan said he expects to begin treatment within the week.
