AURORA, Colo. – The Aurora City Council on Monday unanimously approved a resolution to provide as much as $1.18 million in tax incentives to support Amazon’s plans to build a fulfillment center in the city.
Amazon is building a 1,000,000-square-foot facility near I-70 and E-470 to fill and ship customer orders. The company says it will create 1,000 full-time jobs.
In exchange for Amazon’s investment in the city, the city council approved a 36-percent rebate on the sales and use tax the company would pay over 10 years, for a maximum of $1,184,000. The city said that even with the rebate, it stands to receive more than $5 million in tax revenue from Amazon over the next decade.
Amazon won’t receive any rebates until it creates at least 900 full-time jobs and it must maintain the promised 1,000 jobs over the course of the 10-year agreement. To be considered full-time, the jobs must be at least 36 hours a week and pay an average salary of $30,297.
Amazon already has a sorting facility in Aurora, which opened last June.
