Aurora apartments evacuated after reports of man with gun barricaded inside unit on Sunday morning

AURORA, Colo. - The suspect in a barricade situation at an Aurora apartment complex has surrendered and is in custody.

The Aurora Police Department tweeted that the SWAT team had been called in but was clearing the scene at about 8 a.m.

Several apartments units at 15353 E. 1st Ave. were evacuated early Sunday morning as police investigated reports of a man with a gun barricaded inside a unit nearby. The complex is just off South Chambers Road, a few blocks south of East 6th Avenue.

It started sometime before 5 a.m., according to Lt. Chuck DeShazer with the Aurora Police Department.

It is still early in the investigation, but DeShazer said he believed there was an overnight party at the complex and someone reportedly pointed a weapon at another person. The man then went into one of the units and refused to come out.

It is standard procedure to evacuated units above, below and on both sides of an apartment involved in a standoff situation, DeShazer said.
