Eastbound Interstate 70 between Rifle and Glenwood Springs reopened Wednesday after crews spent much of the day recovering a FedEx semi that crashed into the Colorado River over the weekend.

CDOT said both lanes of eastbound I-70 reopened east of New Castle around 7 p.m. Crews will not need to return tomorrow morning and guardrail replacement work will take place next week.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) anticipated drivers would likely have "major impacts" to traffic in the area once recovery began around 9 a.m.

The FedEx semi and two trailers crashed into the Colorado River just west of Glenwood Springs on Sunday. The recovery required use of a crane to get the semi and its trailers. The crane had to be situated on the right side of eastbound lanes, which caused the impact to traffic.
