As we enter planting season, do you wish you had more bushes and shrubs that would stay green year round?

Mike Bone, with the Denver Botanic Gardens, says there are lots of great choices when it comes to evergreen shrubs in Colorado.

He recommends:

  • Arctostaphylos. This includes manzanitas and bearberries. Bonus: Manzanitas are blooming this time of year.
  • Cercocarpus aka mountain mahogany
  • Dwarf conifers
  • Viburnum
  • Daphne shrubs which have blooming and fragrant flowers in the spring

Bone says you can ask for these at your local gardening center and you can find arctostaphylos and dwarf conifers at the Denver Botanic Gardens' North American Rock Garden Society and Native Plant Society Show and Sale this Saturday, presented by Colorado Native Plant Society.

The sale is Saturday at 9 a.m. and is included in regular admission to the Denver Botanic Gardens.
