WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- A suspect is in custody following a fatal shooting in Westminster late Wednesday.

Westminster police said they received a 911 call about a possible shooting just before 11 p.m. and officers responded to the area of 5500 79th Avenue, where they found a woman dead from a gunshot wound.

Officers in the area spotted an SUV leaving the scene and tried to stop the vehicle but the driver kept going, so the officers used "stop sticks" to deflate the vehicle's tires and bring it to a stop near 112th Avenue and Federal Boulevard.

The suspects then got out of the SUV and took off on foot, police said.

Police set up a perimeter and searched the area, eventually locating two people, one of whom was identified as a suspect and taken into custody.

Police said later Thursday morning that neither of the people who left the area in the SUV was directly involved in the homicide and the actual suspect, Ezekiel Mark Garcia, 24, turned himself in to Thornton police.

Garcia faces a charge of first-degree homicide.

Police have not identified the victim.
