PARK COUNTY, Colo. – A suspect is dead and another man is in the hospital following a carjacking in a rural area of Park County on Sunday.

The Park County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of County Road 70 near Echo Valley Ranch at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday after receiving a carjacking call, deputies said.

The car’s driver had been able to escape and flagged down a ranch employee for help, deputies said. That employee then located and confronted the suspect.

Deputies said a “violent confrontation” occurred that left with the suspect with at least one gunshot wound and the ranch employee with multiple stab wounds.

The suspect took off on foot when deputies arrived on the scene, deputies said. Deputies then located the suspect just before 5 p.m. and called for emergency medical care for both the suspect and the ranch employee.

The suspect was pronounced dead before EMS arrived, deputies said. The ranch employee was taken to a Lakewood hospital in critical condition.

Deputies have not released the suspect’s identity, saying only that he’s a juvenile from Jefferson County.

Because the suspect died while in police custody, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is taking over the investigation.

No police weapons were discharged in the incident.
