A Northglenn police officer survived being shot multiple times during a traffic stop early Saturday morning thanks to his bulletproof vest.
Police said the officer shot back at the suspect, hitting him multiple times. The shooter survived and is in critical condition after undergoing surgery.
The shooting happened at a Diamond Shamrock gas station at West 112th Avenue and Huron Street in Northglenn at around 1:10 a.m.
Police said two Northglenn officers were approaching a black Jetta with two men inside when one of the men started shooting. The shots hit one of the officers, but he was protected by his ballistic vest.

"He was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released, so he's in good spirits and doing well," said Northglenn PD Sgt. Michael DiGiovanni. "I can say everybody is relieved  that our officer was able to go home today."

The second man inside the Jetta was arrested on charges unrelated to this shooting.
Investigators with Northglenn police, the Adams County Sheriff's Office and CBI were still at the gas station gathering evidence hours after the shooting.
