LITTLETON, Colo. -- A teenager is alive after falling 100 feet down a mine shaft in the Roxborough State Park area in Littleton Saturday evening.

The teen, who was hiking with another friend when he fell down an old clay mine or clay pit, is believed to be a 14-year-old boy, according to West Metro Fire Rescue officials.

Officials said they believe the boy climbed up to the area as the mines are elevated and have open shafts, which can only be accessed by climbing just before 8 p.m.

When the teen fell, his friend ran to a house nearby to call 911, officials said.

Several agencies were on scene managing the rescue, which ended at around 9:30 p.m.

The boy is injured, but the extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.

Officials also told Denver7 people and animals fall through these mine shafts from time to time.
