Lakewood Police say a 28-year-old man who ran from officers was shot and killed during a gun battle Tuesday.

Investigators identified the man as Robin Alan Barber on Wednesday.

The incident started around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of a Motel 6 on Wadsworth Boulevard near 6th Avenue.

Lakewood police said officers spotted a stolen car in the motel's parking lot and monitored it until a man walked up to the car.

"When agents attempted to contact the man he ran, resulting in a short foot pursuit," police said. "While pursuing the man he fired shots at the agents. Agents returned fire, striking and hitting the man, who was later pronounced dead on scene."

A woman, who police said was a passenger in the vehicle, was taken into custody for questioning, police said. She has been released pending potential future charges.

Three officers were involved, they were not injured, authorities said.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is investigating the shooting, which is standard practice in all police involved shootings.
