DENVER -- Police arrested a 23-year-old man Wednesday in a crash that killed Denver Post reporter Colleen O’Connor near 1st Ave. and Downing St.
O’Connor, 60, was walking across the crosswalk at the intersection around 8:30 p.m. when she was hit. She was taken to Denver Health Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Thursday morning, Denver Police said Jesus Carreno, 23, is being held for investigation on vehicular homicide and suspected DUI charges, though no formal charges have been filed so far.
Police said Carreno had a green light when the crash happened, but it took him eight blocks to stop after the collision and he showed signs of intoxication.
Denver Post Business Editor Dana Coffield worked with O'Connor for her entire 12-year- career at The Post.
"She handled our most difficult reporting with an incredible level of compassion and curiosity and enthusiasm," Coffield said.
Denver Post Editor Lee Ann Colacioppo released a message to newspaper employees Thursday.
“I can’t imagine a more thoughtful, kind colleague. She was quick with a compliment and quick with a hug or pat on the back or thoughtful word. She picked up my spirits more often than I could count. We are a poorer place without her and I offer my deepest condolences to those of you who knew her best.”
