Judge rules Kevin Lyons competent to stand trial in Centennial triple shooting case

The man accused of shooting his wife and two neighbors in Centennial has been found competent to stand trial, a judge ruled Monday.

Kevin Lyons is accused of shooting his wife and two neighbors on April 4. One of the neighbors, Dr. Kenneth Atkinson, was killed. Lyons' wife and second neighbor suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Lyons was arrested minutes after the shooting.

The next day in court, Lyons was belligerent and repeatedly interrupted Judge Carlos Samour, according to Denver7 reporter Nicole Brady.

Brady reported that Lyons told his public defender "You're not my representative bro, I don't even know you."

He also claimed he had hired "John Elway's lawyer."

He did a similar thing during another court hearing on April 8.

Samour ordered a competency evaluation in mid-April at the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo.

Samour reviewed the evaluation and ruled Lyons competent Monday. Samour scheduled a preliminary hearing for August.

Court documents obtained by Denver7 Investigates indicate that Lyons was charged with the following 14 counts:
