BOULDER, Colo. — Boulder police on Friday morning seized a machete from a man who was seen waving the long knife at cars and climbing onto apartment balconies.

Police said the man "showed indications that he may suffer from mental health issues," and he cooperated with officers after they made contact with him, according to a police news release.

The incident was reported shortly after 10 a.m. and reportedly was happening in the area of Broadway and Marine streets, according to a police news release.

The man was reportedly white with long brown hair and was seen wearing bright-color clothing and a hat with bunny ears, police said.

A caller said the man was yelling at cars and swinging a long knife, or machete, at the cars near Broadway and Arapahoe Avenue. He was then seen walking south along Broadway before reportedly climbing on apartment balconies near Broadway and Marine.

After officers took the knife away from the man, they issued him a summons and released him from custody. Police said they referred the man to a program with resources for mental health concerns.
