AURORA, Colo. -- More than two dozen families are in need of furniture and household items after being displaced from their homes in an Aurora motel.
Twenty-eight families have moved out of the King's Inn since June when new owners took over and nearly doubled the rent. The City Of Aurora stepped in to help these displaced residents find more permanent housing. Although most of the families have found housing, there are still a few that remain at the motel on Colfax.
Many of the people that moved out had called the motel home for years, even decades. They were forced to leave with their clothes and that's about it. Residents say they couldn't take much because the motel was infested with bed bugs.
"We didn’t want to either because it was one of those things where, like, we don’t know what’s got what, what’s infested, what’s not infested," said Jasiah Jones, a former resident.
An organization called Aurora Warms the Night is working to furnish apartments as residents move into new housing. For some of them like Jones it's their first true home.
"They get their place, I guess the hard part is when they get their place imagine walking into an apartment and not having anything in it at all," said Brian Arnold, Executive Director for Aurora Warms the Night.
The nonprofit needs donations of furniture and any household items. Arnold is looking for anything they might need to make a house a home.
He needs help picking up the donations and dropping them off. Arnold would love to find some volunteers willing to do some heavy lifting or anyone with a large truck. Right now he's doing it all with his pickup truck and help from his wife.
