Teenager, 17, shot and killed in Denver near 46th and Ceylon identified

DENVER – A 17-year-old girl who was shot and killed near 46th and Ceylon in Denver Thursday evening has been identified by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.

Zalynnda Kassouge was shot and killed in the 19000 block of East 46th Avenue at around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Just a few hours after she was identified, the Denver Police Department said on Twitter they had arrested a suspect in connection with the case. 

Shamil Jefferson, 25, was arrested some time before 7 p.m. He is being held for investigation of first-degree murder. 

An official with the OEM said the cause of death was from gunshot wounds. The homicide is currently being investigated by the Denver Police Department.

It's unclear if the suspect had been assigned an attorney to represent him in the case.
