PARKER, Colo. — Witnesses to an attack and robbery of a cyclist Tuesday morning in Douglas County weren’t going to let the suspect get away — they held him down until police arrived.

The victim was hospitalized for injuries sustained in the attack.

Rodrigo Ameiorsano, 27, is now in the Douglas County Detention Facility where he was booked on assault, robbery and theft charges. A booking photo is being withheld at this time.

The alleged attack happened around 8 a.m. on a bike path in the area of C-470 and University Boulevard, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Deputies said Ameiorsano, armed with a weapon, physically attacked a cyclist and then stole the victim’s bike.

But deputies say Ameiorsano didn't get too far. Witnesses in the area caught up with the fleeing suspect and were able to restrain him until responding Douglas County deputies arrived on the scene.

“This is a perfect example of human nature and the need to help those in need,” stated Sheriff Spurlock in a news release. “This person was assaulted and those around him jumped into action to make sure the suspect didn't get away, Thank you to all those involved.”

Ameiorsano is being held on a $25,000 bond.

The cyclist remains in the hospital in an unknown condition.
