DENVER – Denver Police are looking for the driver of a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run that left one person dead early Saturday.

The crash happened just before 2 a.m. in the area of 20th and Blake Streets, police said in a news release.

The vehicle is described as a black Range Rover with Colorado license plate VXQ-677.

Police said the vehicle will have heavy front-end damage and was last seen southbound on I-25.

Denver7 spoke to a witness who was there that night when the crash happened.

"I heard the screeching of brakes," said James Burnett, who works as security for one of the bars in the area.
"I was about 50 yards away, and I saw the black SUV go through the intersection and hit the pedestrian."

Burnett immediately ran towards the intersection to check on the victim and was the first on the scene. He then called police.

"When I got to the guy, it was too late," Burnett said. "He already left us."

Burnett said a motorcyclist in the area attempted to chase down the Range Rover as it took off, but could not keep up with the driver on the highway.

"It was a senseless act who ever that was that took off," Burnett said. "I'm just so sorry for the family of the victim. I can't imagine waking up to a phone call about losing your loved ones."

But Burnett does have a message for the driver.

"No matter how scared you are, no matter the cicumstance you're in, you have to face up," Burnett said. "You can't run from this situation."
