Two escaped jail inmates from Conejos County prompt statewide search

CONEJOS COUNTY, Colo. – Two escaped jail inmates in southern Colorado prompted a statewide search early Saturday.

Shortly after 4:30 a.m., Kyle Pauley, 31 and Lawrence Gonzales, 23, were reported missing during a routine check of the housing unit at the Conejos County Jail, which is near the New Mexico border, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

The two were reportedly last seen in the Antonito area.

“It is believed that they have changed clothing and/or appearance,” the release states.

Pauley is 6-feet-tall and weighs 160 pounds. He was arrested on charges aggravated robbery, possession of a weapon and felony menacing.

Gonzales is 5-foot-9 and weighs 165 pounds. He was arrested on charges on intimidation/stalking and drug possession.

The sheriff’s office did not have information as to how the two inmates escaped.

The Antonito Police Department, the Manassa Police Department, the Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Alamosa Police Department, the Costilla County Sheriff’s Office, the Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Office, the Monte Vista Police Department, the Colorado Department of Parole and the Colorado State Patrol are assisting in the search.
