THORNTON, Colo. – Two dogs inside an SUV targeted by a thief in Thornton Wednesday night were reunited with their owner.
The two dogs, Axel and Scout, were waiting inside a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser while the dog’s owner, Jeremy Cooper, went inside a convenience store near the intersection of East 120th Avenue and York Street around 7:30 p.m.
While Cooper was inside the store, a thief jumped into the running SUV and took off.
Police were able to initially track the vehicle using the owner’s cell phone, which was still inside the Toyota. However, police say the thief soon realized that the car was being tracked and threw the phone out of the window. Police later found it in a parking lot.
The dogs were found safe Thursday afternoon after the two became separated. Cooper received two separate phone calls from two different people who found the dogs and called the number on the back of Axel and Scout's tags.
The stolen FJ Cruiser has yet to be located. The SUV is silver in color with temporary tags. If you see the vehicle, call Thornton Police.
