DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — Juvenile suspects in southwestern Colorado will be held in part of a jail following the closure of the juvenile detention center in Durango.

The state center operated by a private company was shut down Aug. 23 after investigations found that staffers had improperly restrained two or more children recently.

La Plata County Sheriff Sean Smith told The Durango Herald that a judge ruled that juveniles arrested in La Plata, Archuleta and San Juan counties can be held in the old portion of the La Plata County Jail for a few days as they await their first court hearing. If a judge decides any juveniles need to be held for longer, the sheriff's office will take them to the juvenile detention center in Grand Junction.
