Police: Man acting erratically shot, killed by Westminster police after attacking officer

WESTMINSTER, Colo. — An officer with the Westminster Police Department shot and killed a man police say attacked the officer and tried to get his gun.

The shooting occurred around 12:30 p.m. Friday outside the Westbury Apartments located in the 11500 block of Pecos Street.

The officer was dispatched to the apartment complex to investigate a report that the man was acting erratically, according to a release from the department.

Police said the shooting victim attacked the arriving officer and attempted to get the officer’s gun when the unidentified male officer fired his weapon, striking the man.

The shooting victim, who has yet to be identified, was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

The officer involved in the shooting was also transported to the hospital for injuries he received in the attack, police said. He was treated and released.

The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Investigation Team will be handling the investigation.
