LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A man police say was involved in a police pursuit and shootout in Lakewood Monday morning has died, according to a release from the Lakewood Police Department.

Police say Anthony Lee Montoya, 51, of Lakewood, died after exchanging gunfire with police while eluding officers in a truck that crashed, ending the pursuit in which the suspect was shot by officers returning fire. Police haven't said if the crash or the shooting caused his death. No other injuries were reported.

The incident began around 8:30 a.m. when Police responded to a house in the 6400 block of West Mexico Avenue on reports that shots were being fired. Police say Montoya was inside the home firing off multiple rounds at-will, hitting other homes in the neighborhood.

As officers moved in, Montoya took off in a truck firing shots along the way, according to the release. The pursuit came to an end a short time later in the backyard of a home.

Paramedics transported Montoya to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Police say Montoya had crashed through several homes as he attempted to elude authorities.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the incident.
