PALMER LAKE, Colo. — A Palmer Lake police officer has been arrested following an accidental shooting early Monday that wounded another officer, authorities said.

Brian Saltzman, 38, was booked into the Douglas County Jail on charges of second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and prohibited use of a weapon, according to the Palmer Lake Police Department.

Deputies responded about 12:15 a.m. Monday to the 4700 block of Lambert Ranch Trail in Sedalia, where one person was injured and taken to a hospital. The sheriff's office said they suspected alcohol to be a factor in the incident, and Saltzman was given a blood test.

A probable cause affidavit said Saltzman was hosting a party at his house following the completion of a field training program. A witness said Saltzman and other had been drinking and were on a basement patio when Saltzman pulled out a handgun and shoot one round behind, without looking.

The round struck another person in the lower leg, the affidavit said.

Saltzman has been employed by the Palmer Lake Police Department since 2016 and is assigned to investigations, officials said. He has been placed on administrative leave.
