FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The man shot and killed by Fort Collins Police early Sunday morning has been identified.

George Randall Newman, 26, died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.

The shooting happened sometime after 5 a.m. when police were called to the America’s Best Value Inn hotel in the area of North College Avenue and West Willox Lane.

The caller told 911 he heard a loud noise and a hole appeared in the ceiling above him.

Officers responded and tried to make contact with Newman, who reportedly opened the door wielding a firearm.

A deputy with The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said the officer fired a weapon immediately after, striking and killing Newman.
