AURORA, Colo. – A man who was shot and killed by Aurora police near the intersection of 6th Ave. and N. Billings St. around midday last Friday following a police chase has been identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
Antonio Sanchez, 36, died from multiple gunshot wounds after police shot him following a short pursuit that started near 1st Avenue and Peoria Street.
His death was classified as a homicide.
Aurora police spokesman Bill Hummel said the man shot by police was the suspect in a shooting the evening of June 28. Hummel said a man showed up to an area hospital with two gunshot wounds; after investigating, they identified the suspect in the shooting and had probable cause for his arrest on an attempted murder charge, Hummel said.
A day later, on June 29, Aurora officers found the suspect before he led officers on a chase.
Hummel said shots were fired, but it was unclear if the suspect shot at officers or if they only shot at him. Hummel also said it was unclear how many officers fired shots.
He said that an investigation and a review of the officers’ body cameras—if they were properly used—would reveal more information that police expected to release in coming days.
Hummel said that a weapon was recovered at the scene that did not belong to the officers.
