COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A man died following a road rage incident and police shooting near Fort Carson early Wednesday.

The Colorado Springs Police Department said Wednesday morning that a least one of its officers was involved in a police shooting around Highway 115 and O'Connell Boulevard, just north of Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

The Colorado Springs Police Department said around 4:45 a.m., an officer saw two vehicles pull into a Safeway parking lot near Highway 115 and South Academy. At least two people were in a verbal altercation before one vehicle left the scene. A person in the remaining car told police that they were a victim of a road rage incident and that the other person had been armed and following them for several miles, according to police.

Police said other officers were called to be on the lookout for the suspect vehicle, which they ended up locating on Highway 115. The suspect driver exited the highway and came to a dead end outside of Fort Carson's Gate 2, police said.

When police pulled in behind the vehicle, the suspect left the car with a handgun, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said, at which time officers fired at him.

At least one shot was fired by the two involved officers, police and the sheriff’s office said. Both have been placed on administrative leave.

The suspect died at the scene, police said. He was identified Thursday evening as 33-year-old Dean Trasente.

No other details were available about the shooting.

No officers were injured.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.
