Frederick Police release suspect photos after backpack was dropped off at police department

FREDERICK, Colo. – Police are asking for the public’s help to identify a suspect who dropped off a backpack in front of the department’s door, causing homes and businesses to be evacuated in the area Thursday afternoon.

The suspect, only identified as a man dressed in all black, was seen walking up to the front doors of the Frederick Police Department at around 4 p.m. leaving a large backpack before running away.

Officers searched the area for the suspect but were unable to find him, Megan Williams, a spokeswoman for the Town of Frederick, said in a statement Friday.

The backpack was treated as an incendiary device and a CodeRed Alert was issued to the public.

The 300 block of 5th Street was sealed off and surrounding businesses as well as homes were evacuated.

After further investigation – including the use of a robot – the backpack was deemed not a threat to the public.

The police department on Friday also posted a video from the building’s surveillance camera with the hope that someone will come forward and identify the man. You can see the video below:
