DENVER – A sergeant with the Denver Sheriff Department faces a misdemeanor assault charge for allegedly slamming an inmate at the jail to the ground without cause.
Sgt. Randolph Romero, 50, was charged Friday.
The incident in question happened March 18 at the downtown detention center. Romero and two other sheriff’s deputies were inside an elevator with an inmate.
The inmate was handcuffed and wearing a spit hood, and Romero took him to the ground “without evident cause,” according to Denver District Attorney Beth McCann.
The inmate suffered a wrist injury during the altercation. McCann said the two other deputies in the elevator at the time were not involved.
Romero’s LinkedIn profile says he’s been with the department since 1988. McCann’s office said it had video of the incident but would not be releasing it Friday.
Romero received a summons in the case, so a mug shot was not available. He’s next due in court Sept. 5.
